Course Outcomes

The RII30719 - Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue by SETS combines classroom learning, group discussion and practical activities, in both a simulated and real-world environment, to learn the necessary skills in the six rescue disciplines.

Note - Throughout each component of the course, you’ll integrate and practise your first aid skills, which is why HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid are both prerequisite units for this course. 25 years of experience in the delivery of emergency response training. We’ve been training for over 25 years in Western Australia and beyond and our trainers have vast experience. Whilst the full course can be completed in a 15-day block, you also have the option to break it up into 2-3 day increments over a 6-month period. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I break up the course timeframe?
Yes you can spread the course over a 6-month period. If you have a roster you’d like to work around, email us your roster, and we can suggest a training plan.
Can I pay in instalments?
You have the option to pay as you go over a maximum 6-month period. If you’d like to pay in instalments, speak to us about breaking up your training schedule accordingly.
Where does this training take place?
The majority of this training occurs at our purpose built facilities in Balcatta (Perth, Western Australia).
I’m green - I’ve had nothing to do with mining or emergency response, can I still do this course?
Yes you can, as long as you meet the course requirements, prerequisites, and entry requirements for this course. If you’re unsure if this course is right for you, please reach out to the friendly SETS training team (08) 9240 5191 and choose Option 1 to chat more about what’s involved.
How fit do I need to be to do this course?
There are certain requirements you’ll need to meet for this course, including being physically fit and able to carry at least 20 kgs of weight whilst climbing a ladder or off the ground. You also need to be able to manage feelings of claustrophobia and fear of heights. For the full list of course requirements please see here.
Can I get RPL or Credit Transfers for units I have already completed?
We offer existing qualifications assessments free of charge. For general information on RPL and Credit Transfers, please see here. For individual advice, please contact the team via training@setservices.com.au with your current qualifications.
I’ve already obtained some of the units for this course, do I need to repeat them?
If you have already completed some units, and are looking to fill the gaps to get your Cert III, reach out to us and we will complete an obligation free training gap analysis for you.
I’m a registered Nurse, Career Firefighter or Paramedic, do I need to complete the entire Cert III?
We’ll need to conduct an existing qualifications assessment to determine what training is required to meet the accredited course requirements. Please contact the SETS Training team to discuss.
Can this training be done onsite?
Yes, absolutely. Whilst we have excellent facilities in the Perth area, it’s common for the SETS Training Team to travel and tailor scenarios and training requirements for specific sites and clients. Please contact us to discuss.
What happens if I start this training and am unable to complete it?
There are many reasons students may start their training and then are not able to complete it as scheduled. It could be a family emergency, illness or injury or that you realise this may not be the right career for you. Whatever the reason, we will work with you to reschedule and support you where possible.
What happens if I am deemed Not Yet Competent in a particular unit?
SETS take our training and the safety of our students very seriously and if we feel a student is not competent in a unit and needs further training, we will work with the student and offer them a free repeat of that unit.
I have been advised I need to be clean shaven to attend the Cert III?
We understand that some students may not wish to shave off their facial hair for religious or other reasons, but it is a legal requirement under Australian Standard 1715-2009: Appendix B – Facial seal of respirators. This standard relates to the restrictions on wearing beards, sideburns, moustaches, and long hair as some of these hair and facial features may prevent an adequate seal between the wearers face and the fitting surfaces of a facemask.
Will I get employed after successful completion of the Cert III?
SETS do mobilise emergency response workers into employment into mining and other industries, however there is no guarantee that we can find a student a placement after attendance. We do however offer career support and guidance during and after your course.
What other training may I need to consider after completion of the Cert III to gain employment as an emergency services officer?
Every mine site may have slightly different requirements, but as a general guideline the following qualifications will assist:

PUAVEH001 Drive vehicles under operational conditions
PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire and PUAFIR302 Suppress urban fire
PUAFIR204 Respond to wildfire and PUAFIR303 Suppress wildfire

Is there any pre-course material I need to complete prior to attendance?
If you have sent us your prerequisite units HLTAID014 Provide advanced first aid and HLTAID011 Provide first aid certificates, as well as your completed Enrolment Form prior to attendance, everything else is included in the course.
Are the courses always delivered Monday – Friday?
There are rare occasions such as public holidays where a course may need to be delivered from Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday to Thursday instead, students will be advised prior to the course if this happens.
