Course Outline

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Course Outcomes:

Basic anatomy and physiology relating to performing CPR
Procedures for performing CPR on adults and children
State and territory regulatory requirements, ARC Guidelines and accepted industry practice relating to currency of skill and knowledge
How to access ambulance/medical assistance and/ or emergency response support
The use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), including when to use and when not to, privacy and confidentiality requirements
The chain of survival and Duty of Care requirements
The importance of being culturally aware, sensitive and respectful
Relevant workplace hazards, infection control principles and procedures, including use of standard precautions
Identifying your own skills and limitations
Stress management techniques and the available support for after an incident
Basic anatomy and physiology relating to performing CPR

The Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines state that CPR skills should be refreshed every 12 months.

ON COMPLETION

Students who attend and successfully meet all assessment requirements of the course will receive a nationally recognised statement of attainment with the following unit of competency: HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

There is a maximum number of 10 participants per program.

To meet the course requirements, students must:

Have sufficient English language, literacy and numeracy skills to read instructions and write assessments
Be physically able to kneel and perform CPR on the floor, uninterrupted for at least 2 minutes (multiple times)
Provide their USI on enrolment
Provide proof of identity, e.g. drivers licence
Wear or bring long sleeve, long pants and closed in shoes
