COURSE DESCRIPTION

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

This unit provides people with the knowledge and skills required to provide emergency life support, including:

  • DRSABCD.
  • CPR techniques for infants, children and adults.
  • How to respond appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting.
  • How to manage an unconscious breathing casualty.
  • How to rotate resuscitators with minimal interruptions to compressions.
  • How to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • How to report an incident to emergency services.
  • How to deal with the following medical emergencies:
  • allergic reaction
  • anaphylaxis
  • bleeding control
  • cardiac conditions
  • choking and airway obstruction
  • respiratory distress, including asthma
  • stroke
  • shock
